HTTPS Needs Maintenance After the Certificate Is Installed
Keep transport encryption, certificate renewal, and client compatibility under review.
HTTPS protects data in transit, but its configuration can become outdated. OWASP recommends strong TLS versions and cipher choices, along with correct certificate handling. A working padlock does not replace regular checks of protocol settings, renewal processes, and the clients that depend on the service.
What matters
- Prefer TLS 1.3 and retain TLS 1.2 only where appropriate for compatibility.
- Disable deprecated protocols and validate certificate trust and hostnames.
- Monitor renewal and expiry so a routine certificate event does not become an outage.
Practical example: A business tests its public endpoint after changing its reverse proxy and verifies that older required clients still connect safely.
One action today: Check the renewal owner and expiry monitoring for one important public service.
