HTTPS Needs Maintenance After the Certificate Is Installed

Keep transport encryption, certificate renewal, and client compatibility under review.

Compiled for Sorlavit Kim Β· Published Β· 1 min read

HTTPS protects data in transit, but its configuration can become outdated. OWASP recommends strong TLS versions and cipher choices, along with correct certificate handling. A working padlock does not replace regular checks of protocol settings, renewal processes, and the clients that depend on the service.

What matters

  • Prefer TLS 1.3 and retain TLS 1.2 only where appropriate for compatibility.
  • Disable deprecated protocols and validate certificate trust and hostnames.
  • Monitor renewal and expiry so a routine certificate event does not become an outage.

Practical example: A business tests its public endpoint after changing its reverse proxy and verifies that older required clients still connect safely.

One action today: Check the renewal owner and expiry monitoring for one important public service.
