Cloud Budgets Are Early Warnings, Not Guaranteed Spending Caps
Monitor actual and forecast spend and decide who responds when costs change.
Cloud usage can grow through idle resources, new services, or an unexpected workload. AWS Budgets supports actual and forecast cost notifications, but billing information and alerts can be delayed. A budget should be part of a response process rather than a promise that spending automatically stops at an exact amount.
What matters
- Assign budgets to accountable teams or workloads instead of only watching a company-wide total.
- Send notifications to people who can investigate and act.
- Use appropriate service limits or tested budget actions when stronger controls are needed.
Practical example: An unexpected test workload triggers a budget notification, prompting its owner to inspect usage and stop unnecessary resources.
One action today: Create a workload budget and verify that its notification reaches an active owner.
